A retired operator’s opinion piece recorded by Starlit Drifter
This question has beeen posed by USC leadership, brought to the table by the reopening of the Nyx gateway and the Confederation re-contacting Levski, as well as various recent events leading to the derelict asteroid requiring concerted effort from both the UEE and USC to keep it alive.
Whilst I am fully commited to helping those in need whenever they require so, regardless of anything that has to do with the people I’m helping, the discussion revolving any sort of alliance with the former mining asteroid has brought a severe feeling of unease and disagreement in the back of my head. There is a disease flowing about the asteroid’s native population that could threaten to spread further, and I’m not talking about the Molina Mold. It isn’t a physical or biological type of disease, it is one that is almost as bad on an ideological level: Communism.
It is my firm belief that this type of thinking should’ve remained buried along with the failed attempts to put the theory into practice back on old Earth. A simple look at the sheer state of Levski itself can speak more about the hypocrisy and threatening nature of its inclinations. Poverty, delapidation, lack of maintenance, a decay in law and order. Had the separation from the UEE for the embrace of communism been the grand statement move that is tauted, why is Levski itself in a state that radiates lack of maintenance or care for its population?
The USC stands for the prosperity of its citizens, but the rule of law and the power of the vote guide that prosperity. Debate is open, encouraged and heard, and the structure of its political body provides a stabilizing platform upon which the body of the state rests on. The USC ships aren’t so broken down there’s a risk of mold threatening the crews. The USC infrastructure isn’t so badly degraded that it prohibits its citizens from helping themselves, each other and others on the outside.
Levski is a ticking timebomb of bad ideology that may prove itself to be an issue in the long term. If history proves anything it’s that there’s only a matter of time until bad actors take advantage of the “People’s Alliance” and turn it into their own personal mockery of what it once stood for.
The USC should help the people of Levski struggling with the Molina mold. The USC should trade with Nyx, help where help is needed, build relationships with individuals and organizations, definitely. But an alliance with communism? I say no. It is anathema to any sort of competent, and even incompetent system of government, and in the long run it can do more harm than good. The risks of it definitely outweigh the benefits.
Send communism back to the pits of history where it belongs. Keep looking for the better future.
