USCS Black Horizon Rescue Mission

“…[Radio Static]…. Pirates boarding the ship…[Radio Static]…Object found and we fear pirates will seize…[Radio Static]…Request assistance…[Radio Static].”

This was the last transmission received from the USCS Black Horizon, a Carrack-class exploration vessel that had been conducting a deep undercover, classified Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) mission in the Pyro system. The vessel had been tasked with scouring the Pyro system over the course of several days — if not weeks — in search of specific objects to be returned to headquarters. Contact was intentionally limited, though at scheduled intervals, status reports were relayed back to ONI to confirm the Black Horizon remained on course.

The final message was transmitted as the ship traveled near Pyro V. As the distress call suggested, the crew had apparently succeeded in retrieving the target objects, but had been boarded by pirates and were in desperate need of immediate assistance

Operation Black Horizon

Operation Black Horizon was swiftly called into action with a clear dual objective: rescue the crew of the USCS Black Horizon and recover the sensitive objects they had retrieved.

The USCS Waters, a Polaris-class corvette, was designated as the primary rescue vessel and readied for deployment. Supplies, weapons, two Fury snub fighters, and a medical Pisces were loaded aboard in preparation for departure from Everus Harbor. As the last of the crew came on board and several Wolf snub fighters were being brought into the hangar bay, disaster struck without warning — an Esperian Talon flew in and crashed directly into the Polaris’s hangar bay, instantly destroying every parked ship inside. Whether this was a deliberate pirate attack or a tragic accident remains unsolved to this day.

Either way, the incident set the mission back considerably. The USCS Waters underwent emergency repairs while replacement ships were hastily loaded aboard. Despite the setback, both tasks were completed with remarkable speed, and the corvette departed Everus Harbor bound for Pyro.

The transit was largely uneventful, save for a technical failure that disabled the ship for approximately 45 minutes before the issue was resolved. The malfunction was most likely a consequence of residual damage from the Talon crash, as the earlier repairs had been rushed and further work was required en route.

As the USCS Waters drew closer to the last known coordinates of the Black Horizon, the ship’s decryption units worked around the clock, continuously feeding new intelligence to the crew. One such lead directed the mission toward Fairo, a moon orbiting Pyro V. With a steady stream of incoming data and the Wolfs deployed for aerial reconnaissance, a full-scale search of the area commenced.

It took time, but the wreck of the USCS Black Horizon was eventually located by crew member Arthur “Neptune” Cevir. Little remained of the vessel. Nevertheless, at least one pirate had stayed behind — Arthur Cevir came under small arms fire and immediately called for backup. The rest of the crew responded swiftly, and the lone pirate was overpowered and taken into custody in the brig of the USCS Waters, where he was subsequently questioned for further details about what had transpired.

Meanwhile, a second team continued to sweep the area for survivors or additional clues. Their search turned up two Grade-A prototype components hidden within a nearby cave — later confirmed to be the very items the Black Horizon had been sent to retrieve.

With nothing more to be found, the USCS Waters set course for Stanton Gateway Station to offload its crew and undergo much-needed repairs. During the return journey, the prisoner was questioned further. He confirmed what many had already feared: every member of the USCS Black Horizon crew had been killed — news that was received with heavy hearts by all aboard.

Conclusion

This mission marked the first operation fully commanded by Robin Krosfjord — an officer who has not been without controversy. Krosfjord has previously drawn criticism for a number of questionable decisions made during earlier missions, and this operation was no exception to scrutiny. In the aftermath, speculation circulated that the notably light pirate resistance encountered at the crash site may have been a result of bombing carried out in a prior mission under Krosfjord’s command. However, no concrete evidence has emerged to substantiate that claim, and it reads more as yet another attempt to retroactively justify past decisions than as a credible operational assessment.

Despite the noise surrounding its commander, the mission itself must be judged a success. The USCS Black Horizon is gone, lost with all hands — a grim outcome that should not be understated. The crew of that vessel gave their lives in service of a mission whose importance only became fully clear in its aftermath. Their sacrifice deserves to be remembered beyond the margins of an after-action report.

Yet what was lost in crew was not lost in purpose. The critical components were recovered, the fate of the Black Horizon was determined, and a potential intelligence disaster was averted. The objects never reached the wrong hands.

What this mission demonstrates, above all else, is the USC’s capacity to act decisively under pressure. From the chaos of the hangar crash at Everus Harbor, to the technical failures mid-flight, to the search across the moons of Pyro V — the crew of the USCS Waters adapted, improvised, and delivered. When it matters most, the USC does not falter.

The Black Horizon may be gone. But the mission it died for was not in vain.
